"Ready to face the music?" Clara asked with a small smile.

"Only if it's in the Athens Symphony Hall." Josiah folded his hands behind his back and strode forward, marching down the long sidewalk.

When he arrived at the gates with his small posse of people behind him, he found an assortment of journalists, police, and guild officers waiting on him. Cameras flashed, questions were called out, but he ignored it all. Instead, he found himself facing the Chief of Police, who marched up to him with a pair of magic-suppressing handcuffs.

"Josiah Mather?"

"Yes?" Josiah nodded respectfully.

"I'm afraid I have to ask you to come with me." The chief frowned. "You're under arrest."

"Whatever for?" Josiah held out his hands even as Clara and Officer Mitchell began to protest.

"Trespassing, unlawful relations, attempted assassination of protected guild members, and..." The policeman glanced over at the othersh. "And whatever the story is with those two."

As the chief approached Josiah with a pair of magic-suppressing handcuffs, the paladin met his gaze with a calm, unwavering resolve. Despite the protests of his allies, Josiah held up a hand, silencing their objections.

"Chief," Josiah began, his voice steady and filled with quiet respect, "you are a good man, a servant of justice. I will not raise my hand against you today. There is much that demands my attention, and I cannot allow this matter to impede the important work that lies ahead. I will accompany you willingly, trusting in the fairness of the system you represent."

The chief, taken aback by Josiah's unexpected cooperation, nodded solemnly. As he secured the handcuffs around the paladin's wrists, a flicker of understanding passed between them, a recognition of the greater forces at play.

Unknown to Josiah, Madeline watched the scene unfold from a distance. Her eyes narrowed, a scowl twisting her weathered features. With a muttered curse, she reached for her phone, punching in a number with a sense of urgency.

"We have a problem," Matiline hissed into the device.

Removing his weapons, Josiah offered his wrists to the chief. "I'll go peacefully. But tend to Franklin and Zach first - they've been through an ordeal."

Clara stepped forward, eyes blazing. "This is insanity! After everything Josiah has done, you're going to arrest him like a common criminal?"

Officer Mitchell laid a hand on her shoulder, his own expression pained but resolute. "The law is the law, no matter how we feel about it. But don't worry - I'll make sure he's treated fairly. Josiah knows what he's doing."

As the cuffs were placed on Josiah's wrists, Clara felt a lump in her throat. His calm acceptance was equal parts inspiring and maddening. After all they'd been through, all the darkness they'd driven back, how could the system fail them so completely?

Josiah offered her a reassuring smile. "Have faith, Clara. This is just another path we must walk. No matter what lies ahead, I'll face it head-on."

The police escorted Josiah to an unmarked vehicle, which silently navigated the shadowed streets back to the Cedar District. In this secluded part of the city, they arrived at an inconspicuous entrance hidden from the untrained eye.
